The Rise of Hobo Johnson

The way the internet works just is what it is at this point. When something goes “viral” you can’t escape it. Sometimes though…this is a good thing.

It was mid-day yesterday when a buddy of mine shared a video, explaining that it’s hard for him to describe why he loves it as much as he does, as well as all the other things the artist in the video is doing.

The artist in question is Hobo Johnson and the Lovemakers. The video in question is a recording of his new song called “Scones”….or “Peach Scones” I’m not 100% sure.

In fact I’m not 100% sure how my emotions are doing right now, because that’s the effect that Hobo Johnson’s 2017 album “The Rise of Hobo Johnson” has had on me. From the moment I finished my 7th sitting of “Scones” I scrambled to open iTunes and find what else he’s got.

I’ve heard “spoken word” performances before, and I’ve heard a hell-of-a-lot of rap. It’s incredibly rare that you find something like this where it’s a bridge between both, backed up by tight music that hits you right in the R&B feels. The lyrics, if you want to call them that, range from Action Bronson-level ridiculousness on city life to heavy deep-thought on relationships, love and divorce. The album as a whole is an assault on the senses like the first time you try your favorite food.

You’ve had similar meals, but this is different in the way it looks and the way it tastes. The texture is perfect and feels sophisticated, but in reality is a naturally simple dish that fills you up and feels like home.

All in all, it’s the most revolutionary thing I’ve heard in all my years of consuming art. Even if you think you won’t like it, seek it out and see for yourself. It may seem crazy from the get-go, with his early 2000’s middle school nerd look and Micheal Cera mustache. But it will be a short few moments until your heart is stolen down a ride that switches between a rollercoaster and slowly tubing down a river mid-verse.

One of these days i’ll really be able to put it into words, but like with anything music related….it’s not about what it is, it’s about how it makes you feel.

Peep it.
